How to Set Up M-PESA Funeral Contributions

Why M-PESA for Funeral Contributions

In Kenya and across East Africa, funerals are a communal responsibility. Family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and even acquaintances come together to support the bereaved family with contributions towards burial costs. Traditionally, these contributions were collected in person at harambee meetings. Today, M-PESA has become the primary way people send funeral contributions because it is fast, accessible, and does not require the sender to travel.

Setting up a clear and organised M-PESA collection ensures that contributions reach the right person, are easy to track, and that donors feel confident their money is going where it should.

Option 1: Paybill Number

If the family or organising committee has access to a Paybill number, this is the most transparent method. A Paybill is linked to a bank account, and every transaction is recorded with the sender's name and phone number. To set one up, visit your bank or apply through the Safaricom M-PESA portal. The process can take a few days, so it is worth starting early if you anticipate the need.

When sharing the Paybill, always include the Business Number, the Account Name (usually the name of the deceased or the family), and clear instructions. For example: "Send to Paybill 123456, Account Name: Funeral of John Kamau."

Option 2: Send to Personal Number

If a Paybill is not available, a trusted family member's personal M-PESA number can be used. Choose someone reliable who is willing to keep clear records. To avoid confusion, designate a single number rather than sharing multiple contacts.

Ask contributors to include a short reference in the M-PESA message or to send a confirmation text after contributing. This helps the coordinator keep an accurate list of donors for acknowledgment purposes.

Sharing Contribution Details

The most important step is making the details easy to find and share. Post the M-PESA information in WhatsApp groups, on social media, and on the funeral poster or announcement. If the family has a digital memorial page, the contribution details can be pinned prominently so that anyone visiting the page can contribute without having to call and ask for the number.

  • Include the following in every communication:
  • The M-PESA Paybill or phone number.
  • The account name or reference to use.
  • The name of the person coordinating contributions.
  • A brief note on what the funds will cover (e.g., burial expenses, transport, catering).

Tracking and Accountability

Keep a running record of all contributions received, including the sender's name, amount, and date. After the funeral, share a summary with contributors or the wider family. This transparency builds trust and honours the generosity of everyone who gave.

Many families create a simple spreadsheet or use the M-PESA transaction history to compile the list. If the contributions are managed through a digital memorial page, some platforms offer built-in tracking that simplifies this process.

A Modern Approach to a Timeless Tradition

Harambee has always been about community. M-PESA simply extends that community beyond physical borders. A relative in the diaspora can contribute just as easily as a neighbour down the road. By setting up a clear, well-communicated M-PESA collection, you honour the tradition of communal support while making it accessible to everyone who wants to help.
