What to Include in a Funeral Program

Why a Funeral Program Matters

A funeral program, sometimes called an order of service, is a printed or digital document given to attendees at a funeral or memorial service. It outlines what will happen during the service and provides key information about the person being honoured. For many families, the program also becomes a meaningful keepsake that they hold onto for years.

Whether you are putting together a simple single-page handout or a detailed multi-page booklet, the goal is the same: help guests follow along and provide a lasting tribute.

The Cover

The front cover typically includes the full name of the deceased, their date of birth and date of passing (often styled as "sunrise" and "sunset"), a photograph, and the date and location of the service. Choose a photo that captures their spirit, whether that is a formal portrait or a candid moment that shows their personality.

Order of Service

This is the programme of events for the ceremony. A typical order of service might include:

  • Opening prayer or invocation — delivered by the officiant or a family member.
  • Scripture reading or poem — a passage that held meaning for the deceased or the family.
  • Musical selection or hymn — congregational singing or a recorded piece.
  • Eulogy or tributes — one or more speakers sharing memories.
  • Sermon or reflection — if the service is faith-based.
  • Final viewing or farewell — if applicable.
  • Closing prayer and benediction.
  • Recessional — the music played as the casket is carried out.

List each item with the name of the person responsible so guests know who is speaking or performing.

Hymns and Songs

If the congregation will sing, include the full lyrics so that everyone can participate. List the hymn number if using a hymnal. For recorded music, you can simply note the title and artist.

Biography or Life Story

A short biography gives context to those who may not have known the deceased well. Cover the highlights: where they grew up, their education and career, marriage and children, hobbies, community involvement, and any achievements they were proud of. Keep it warm and personal rather than reading like a CV.

Photos

Including a selection of photos brings the program to life. A timeline of images, from childhood through to recent years, tells a visual story. If space on a printed program is limited, consider directing guests to an online memorial page where a full gallery is available.

Acknowledgments

A brief note from the family thanking attendees for their presence, condolences, and support is a gracious touch. You may also thank specific people who helped organise the service, provided meals, or travelled long distances to attend.

Pallbearers and Flower Bearers

List the names of pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. If there are flower bearers or other participants with special roles, include them as well.

Going Digital

Printed funeral programs have served families well for generations, but more and more families are choosing to create digital programs that can be shared instantly with anyone, anywhere. A digital program can include everything a printed booklet does, plus multimedia like video tributes, a photo gallery, and a space for visitors to leave their own messages. It also eliminates the stress of estimating print quantities and the cost of last-minute reprints when plans change.

If you are planning a service, consider creating a digital memorial page that serves as both the program and a lasting tribute. It can be shared via a simple link on WhatsApp, email, or social media, reaching family and friends across the globe in seconds.

Whatever format you choose, a well-prepared funeral program honours the deceased, supports the family, and gives every attendee a meaningful connection to the service.
